Snapping snowflakes under a microscope has become more than a winter hobby for New York Professor Michael Peres. It has become a scientific art form. For more than a decade, Peres has been taking photos in his garage in sub-zero temperatures. What started as a suggestion from one of his photography students at the Rochester Institute of Technology turned into an incredible collection of images, as seen above.

“Photographing snowflakes must be accomplished at temperatures that are below freezing and be performed outdoors or in unheated structures,” Peres said in an interview with Weather.com. “To photograph snowflakes, all equipment must also be kept below freezing, which is necessary to preserve the ice crystal as long as possible.”
