Hacking Democracy – How Vulnerable Are Our Elections To Hacking? [1]

Election day 2014 is only 18 days away as of today. I am a staunch advocate of voting. I don’t believe that abstaining from the democratic process is a proactive protest of any kind. Not voting is a sign of subservience to our corporate overlords in my mind, but that’s not the point I want to be making here. My big question is: how vulnerable are our elections to hacking?

In 2007, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner had the same question, so she commissioned Project Everest, which was a thorough review of the security of electronic voting technology used in the state that elected her. What she found was fairly disturbing...
