Cultivating God Within - Artistic Creativity

It's Spring! What better moment to plant the seeds of God within yourself? While we're far more about Being than doing here at the Galactic Free Press, I want to discuss some of the things you can do to assist yourself in discovering the Divine Within. In this article I'll talk about an excellent way of doing that, art.

Art is a language beyond words, even if words are part of the medium. Art is a way of communicating feeling, and a painting can evoke a feeling far more quickly and efficiently that 100,000 words. Language is really quite limited in that respect. Even if it's purely unconscious, a person expresses their feelings and emotions through their artistic creations. It can be a very powerful tool for getting in touch with those aspects of yourself.

You are an artist, even if you haven't realized that yet. Everyone is, everybody has that Creative Spark within. Even if you believe "I suck at drawing", and then you go to draw, you will probably create exactly what you intended, a sucky drawing. That's still creativity! I do recommend expressing something other than self-judgment through your art, but either way you'll still be getting in touch with how you feel. You have to acknowledge that before you can really evolve.

I recommend completely free expression in your art, let go of self-judgment and any preconceptions of how you're supposed to do things. If you believe you're not artistic, that's what you'll get, and even a one year-old will produce "better" art than you. I suspect that the kind of people who believe they can't create art are really just afraid of self-expression, which is all art is. They don't want to face the ugly parts within themselves, which is something I've noticed all artists go through.

With a medium like photography, or with a realistic drawing or painting, one has to learn to really see. Most people believe they can see, but they do far more perceiving with their minds than actual seeing. A person who perceives a mundane and boring world around them will create mundane and boring art. A person who can really see the wonder and the beauty of Life will express that through their art, though it may take some practice first.

There are so many different forms of artistic creation that I'm sure there's something for everyone. Through playing an instrument, singing or digital music creation, you can learn to really hear. Through dance, you can learn to really feel your body. Other forms I haven't mentioned yet include sewing, crochet, knitting, woodworking, landscaping, sculpture, architecture, film-making, interior design, poetry, graffiti, mixed-media... the list goes on and on.

If you want a practice for getting in touch with yourself, choose an art form and just go do it. Let go of self-judgment, and create something for yourself. Do it without any care of what other people will think of it. Even if you think it's ugly when your done, that's okay! I wouldn't get discouraged, it's very unlikely that you'd create a masterpiece on your first try. A great artist isn't necessarily one with natural talent, but one that didn't give up so easily.
