Natural Remedies For: Sore Throat
(editor's note: Cloves are actually the flower buds from the clove tree. Most people know them as a culinary spice with a woody pungent odor. They also gift us with wonderful medicinal properties.
The Clove tree is a member of the evergreen Myrtle family which reproduces easily. Originally from the Spice Islands, Clove trees also help humans as a source of revenue in the African countries of Mozambique, Tansania and Madagascar! Did you know that chewing on a whole Clove can treat a toothache or help with an upset tummy?

Today I'll teach you an easy way to make your own Clove Tincture. A tincture is a highly concentrated distillation. It takes 4-6 weeks to "steep" the medicinal oils from the plant but once made the tincture has a long shelf life -up to a year. This particular tincture makes a marvelous gargle or mouth rinse for a sore throat. You can use Clove powder, but the whole Clove is of higher quality and it's effectiveness lasts longer.)
Clove Tincture for a Sore Throat
3-4 whole cloves
1 cup of brandy

Using a mortar and pestle (or placing the cloves between a tea towel and crushing them with a hammer) coarsely crush the cloves. You don't need to reduce it to tiny particles, just enough to begin releasing the oils from the tough woody exterior.
Add 2 tablespoons of the crushed cloves to 1 cup of brandy in a jar. Seal with a lid and allow it to steep at room temperature for 4-6 weeks. Don't forget to mark your calendars!
When the time has passed, strain out the cloves. The oils have leeched out into the brandy, the alcohol acts as a preservative.
To use: add 5-10 drops of the Clove tincture to 1/2 cup of water and gargle with it as often as needed for sore throat relief.
