Vicki Sando is a teacher who has created a solar-panel/garden array on top of their public school building. This allows for the students to be up close and personal with learning about science. Sando had discovered PS 41’s garden roof in 2003, then with 2 million dollars and 10 years in the future, the solar array was set-up on the schools building.

Sando had told the Capital, “We made connections between plant study. Plants are little solar cells. I had my fifth graders take apart a solar calculator and show them how it worked. We don’t have a stand-alone curriculum on solar, but we’ll do projects where we’ll fold it into it.”

The Mayor of New York City, Bill De Blasio, reports that 23 million dollars will bring solar panels to 24 public schools approximately in the summer of 2016. As Sando and the students await the near future, they continue to learn and grow on their very own roof top. Way to go kids!
