This week, lawmakers are voting on the "No National Parks" bill. If it passes, US presidents would no longer be able to protect natural treasures by creating national parks.

Lawmakers proposed this bill because President Obama expanded a national park in California. Obama's action protects more than one thousand acres of beach, bluffs, and endangered species on California's coast. The bill's proponents consider this a misuse of presidential power.

In recent years, Congress has been incredibly unproductive. It's appalling that lawmakers are springing to action to target national parks. This bill would overturn a 108-year-old law that has allowed presidents from both parties to protect iconic American sites like the Grand Canyon or the Statue of Liberty.

The bill, H.R. 1459, would require congressional review of proposed monuments. Congress has not protected a piece of public land since 2009 -- so it's safe to say this bill will act as an effective "No More National Parks" law.

Sites like Yosemite and Yellowstone are vital parts of American history, and they need our protection. Pollution, climate change and industrialization are threatening our water and land, making it more important than ever to preserve our national treasures for future generations. With energy companies pressuring the government to let them drill and mine in national parks, we can't afford to remove critical protections.

Congress should make environmental protection a priority rather than throwing a temper tantrum.
