For many of you living in warmer climates spring is probably not as big a deal, but for those of us living in the colder climates, spring is usually huge! It usually means after a long freezing winter of stark white and no color or bird song, life begins to return. If you have never lived where it is freezing cold and snow-covered for months on end, you would be surprised how much color holds meaning for you. You may not appreciate colors as much if you are blooming with flowers year round, but for the snow dwellers, color is magic. I remember once telling someone how much I hated winter and they asked me why. I had to think about it for a while and I realized that along with the misery cold temperatures can bring and days that turn dark at 4:00 in the afternoon, it was really the lack of color and the music of bird song being absent that put me over the edge. White as far as the eye can see day after day and no birds and their happy chatter. Spring means life returns and spirits lift and soar.

This year is a good time to encourage ourselves to appreciate the wonders going on around us such as when spring arrives and what that means, the arrival of summer and gardens of produce and bright-colored flowers. Times are tough in many ways right now and if we can find ways to life out spirits and feel good amidst the darkness, then we must make the effort to do this, rather than fall into an abyss of despair.

Take walks outside and take note of changes each day. What tree blooming today might not have been blooming yesterday. People closely connected to the earth do this anyway, regardless of what is going on. It is wise to engage in reconnecting with nature for we have disengaged so much we are losing our abilities to sense what we need to sense from mother nature. She offers much valuable information, life-giving information and we need to pay attention and reconnect. If your grocery stores were to go bare tomorrow would you know how to live off the land? We cannot depend on such luxuries, for anything can happen and we need to know how to survive in any given situation.

Plan a vegetable garden for this summer to both help you connect to the earth again but also for your own food. If things get scarce you will at least have food growing outside your door to keep you alive. Learn how to can your produce if you don’t know how and put some of it away for the winter months. Grow your own herbs and dry them for winter as well. If you live in the city find space for container gardening or a communal garden space you can join. If you have space available to plant flowers do so. They are so uplifting. A bright vase of mixed flowers sitting in the middle of your table can make all the difference in the world. Fragrant varieties are a plus for not only their color but the sweet, spicy fragrances that will float through your home.

Take advantage of farmers markets if you have any close by. The food you buy will be far fresher only having had to travel a few miles down the road, but also you support your local growers and take away profits from the big corporations and it puts the squeeze on them to change their ways. GMO foods are very destructive to our systems and our health. We should be avoiding them at all costs. Other wiser countries won’t even allow them in because they know the dangers. America doesn’t care about its people and in fact I feel like it seems to be going out of its way to destroy the people’s health. Most farmers markets have organic produce so do yourself a favor and buy it and forget that case of soda.

So with spring upon us and summer soon to follow it is a good time to rejoice in all the beauty that abounds and make time to take good care of ourselves. If we eat well and exercise and embrace our souls with flowers and beauty we will flourish despite all the garbage going on around us. The dark ones may be hovering over us all but they dare not come to close to light for it is blinding to them. If we love ourselves and love each other and look for the beauty all around us everyday we will be staying in our hearts and shinning our light brightly for others to see and gravitate towards. When others come, welcome them with open arms and help them to embrace the light as well and we will grow in numbers. If we stay in our hearts all will be well. Happy Easter to all and happy spring!

Blessings to you all,

Visionkeeper
