7:48 p.m. CDT Saturday: Tornado damage reported 2 miles west of Rozel, Kan. Reports say one house was nearly destroyed. The two residents that were inside are okay.

Record Cold in the Midwest, Northeast

It felt more like late March than mid-May across the Midwest and the interior mid-Atlantic on Sunday and Monday as cold Canadian air penetrated the United States once again this spring.

This cold snap began early on Saturday afternoon when a cold front pushed through the Great Lakes. Cold air filtered in behind this front and was accompanied by rain and snow showers that lasted into Sunday morning across Michigan and Wisconsin.

Flooding occurred in Baton Rouge, La., early Friday morning as severe storms unleashed heavy rain over a short amount of time.

 

A line of violent thunderstorms hammered southern Louisiana early Friday morning, unleashing several inches of rain over the course of a couple of hours, damaging wind gusts and large hail.

More than half a foot of rain deluged some communities in southern Louisiana. Sulphur, La., was inundated by 7.83 inches of rain over the 24-hour period ending at 1:30 p.m. CDT Friday.

Severe thunderstorms will continue to diminish over the southern Plains during the early morning hours of Friday, but there will still be a few storms that can produce large hail and damaging winds. In general, heavy rain will be the biggest threat from remaining showers and thunderstorms.

The storms began Wednesday, unleashing baseball-sized hail and torrential rain, and resulting in three confirmed tornados.

Snow Clobbers Parts of Colorado Again

While areas from Denver to Pueblo along I-25 were spared heavy snow this time, the high country to the west was hit with up to a couple of feet of snow Thursday.

A push of cooler, but moist air from the east was just enough to bring a heavy snowfall to the Colorado Rockies from late Wednesday into the afternoon hours Thursday.

A powerful cold front pushed across the area, stirring winds as high as 50-60 mph (80-90 km/h), on Monday night.

Alaska Endures Record Cold While Still Buried Under Snow

While winter is finally breaking over much of Alaska this week, it has be a slow start to spring in much of the Last Frontier. (Photos.com image)

 

The central and eastern United States are not the only areas experiencing a colder-than-average spring. Alaska is also hanging on to winter's chill and snow.

The five-week period from April 3 to May 7 was the coldest in 109 years of record keeping at Fairbanks, Alaska, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Arkansas' First Ever Occurrence of Snow in May

It was a tale of two seasons across Arkansas on Friday as snow-covered spring flowers, creating a scene similar to this photo by Photos.com.

 

Since record-keeping began in 1819, Arkansas never had snow fall in May; that was until Friday.

Arkansas joined the list of places the recent rare May snowstorm made history, and restarted the climate change debate in the process.
