The Importance Of Teaching Kids How To Grow Food

Some of my 20-something friends and I have been noticing an interesting trend: there are almost no kids playing outside anymore. Nine times out of ten, I see the parks around my neighborhood completely empty. I feel more likely to see adults playing basketball at the courts than kids. Why is this?

Probably a number of reasons. Helicopter parenting, parents deeming the outdoors to just be totally unsafe, and probably video games and television too. But with food insecurity, or as I like to call it, ‘going hungry’ is on the rise and now 1 in 5 children lives in poverty, the knowledge of how to grow food is even more important.

So we have a responsibility to teach kids about agriculture, at home and at school. Do you agree?

Hacking Democracy – How Vulnerable Are Our Elections To Hacking?

Election day 2014 is only 18 days away as of today. I am a staunch advocate of voting. I don’t believe that abstaining from the democratic process is a proactive protest of any kind. Not voting is a sign of subservience to our corporate overlords in my mind, but that’s not the point I want to be making here. My big question is: how vulnerable are our elections to hacking?

In 2007, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner had the same question, so she commissioned Project Everest, which was a thorough review of the security of electronic voting technology used in the state that elected her. What she found was fairly disturbing...

Alan Watts And Terence McKenna On Global Unity

When you look at the big picture, we seem like a raging, violent, senseless species, don’t we? New wars breaking out of resources, money and land everywhere you look. Even bombs going off intended to hurt people that are hardly any different than the bombers.

But when you hit the sidewalk and ask around, you don’t find people lusting for blood, gunning for the murder of others; you might even find a vegetarian or two turned so far off of violence that they won’t even eat another animal. Why the disconnect?

Terence McKenna and Alan Watts, two brilliant minds, discuss our need for a sense of unity.

What’s The Deal With Net Neutrality? A Simple Primer

So what is net neutrality? Why is it important? Why should it matter to me? All incredibly valid questions. Net neutrality isn’t the sexiest political issue, like same sex marriage or foreign wars, but it is an important one nonetheless. Telecommunication companies like Comcast want the FCC to push for two (or more) different speeds of internet connect. Slower for the standard rate, faster if you’re willing to pay for it. A commoner’s internet and the elite’s internet, if you will.

President Obama recently came out and said that he supports only a single lane, not a fast lane or a slow lane, and that he expects the FCC to maintain current net neutrality rules. Is the fight over? Not quite. It’s still important to be educated on this.

5 Ways To Heal Indigestion The Ayurvedic Way

url2
Indigestion is a pretty broad label. Basically, it’s any feeling of discomfort after eating. Sometimes it’s heartburn, other times it can be stomach ache. It really sucks to get indigestion.

But there are a lot of natural, Ayurvedic medications that have been used by the Hindu people for thousands of years. These five methods are time-tested ways to help get rid of that nasty indigestion.

First, mix fennel, thyme, coriander, cumin seeds, and black pepper into your food. This will help your body digest food and reduce the chance of having indigestion.

Squeezing lemon juice onto your food, or adding a bit of ginger can also reduce gastrointestinal distress and relieve gassiness. You can also add lemon juice to a glass of water to drink with your meal...

With modern technology, we have been able to learn much more about her life. An MRI has revealed to us that the young woman suffered breast cancer and a bone marrow infection at her time of death. An Airplane Made Of Hemp? This Canadian Company Is Making It A Reality

airplane-wallpaper-3

Earlier today, I remarked to a friend of mine that if it’s something you make, you can probably make it out of hemp. I wasn’t thinking airplanes, but as it turns out, Ontario-based company Hempearth has signed a contract with Velocity Inc., a Florida-based plane manufacturer to build the world’s first airplane made of hemp.

Holy awesome!

Derek Kesek, owner of Hempearth, says the plane will be constructed from at least 75% hemp, which includes the wings, seats, pillows, and outer shell. The plane will be the color of natural hemp fiber too, and will in all likeliness run on hemp biofuel...

This Medicinal Mushroom Of Myth Is Only Found In Original Growth Forests

Fungi have a lot of different uses for humanity. They can clean up the soil and oceans, act as building materials, and you can even be buried in a suit of fungi to break down your body after you die. Creepy!

This mushroom, the “big wood conk” is the world’s longest living mushroom and has been used by native people to address a variety of ailments, like coughing, asthma, arthritis, bleeding and some infections. The Greeks believed that it could treat Tuberculosis and serve as an elixir for a long life.

According to the Cornell University mycology blog:

The key pharmaceutically-active compound found in Fomitopsis officinalis is Agaricin (or agaric acid), a white, water-soluble powder that can be administered both orally and topically. Agaricin is an anhidrotic, anti-inflammatory, and parasympatholytic agent, and is now produced synthetically by many pharmaceutical companies.

Interestingly, the medicinal properties of Fomitopsis officinalis are believed to have been discovered independently by the i...
