Using Food as Medicine: How One Hospital is Using Organic Produce to Help Heal

feature_image_template
In 431 B.C. Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”

More than 2500 years later, we are inundated with advertisements boasting the latest, greatest cure-all super drug. From a young age, we learn that it doesn’t matter how or what we eat, there is a quick fix around the corner for whatever ails us—whether we’re obese, have high blood pressure or bad cholesterol—just to name a few of the issues plaguing our society.

It now seems almost revolutionary to think that we can change our health by changing the food we eat.

But, one hospital in Pennsylvania thought just that.

Best Meditation is No Meditation

There are many people who jump into Eastern spiritual practices. Some even take spiritual journeys to the East to find wisdom and learn how to correctly meditate. There are also many so called “spiritual gurus” who have found ways to adapt (in most cases simplify) many different Eastern spiritual practices for the Western Mind. There is nothing wrong with it and it is great that we all have opportunity to learn from different cultures and use different spiritual practices to make our life better.

However, there is one very important thing that is not being stressed enough. Many people treat meditation, visualization techniques and other practices as a panacea for everything. Many of them actually get so high on their meditation that they forget to enjoy living here on our planet. Yes, it is really fun and blissful to meditate and feel united with our cosmos, but what about finding happiness in actual living?

How Many of These Spiritual Awakening Symptoms Do You Have?

by Annarita

1. Changing sleep patterns: restlessness, hot feet, waking up two or three times a night.
Feeling tired after you wake up and sleepy off and on during the day. There is something called the Triad Sleep Pattern that occurs for many: you sleep for about 2-3 hours, wake up, go back to sleep for another couple of hours, wake again, and go back to sleep again. For others, the sleep requirements have changed. You can get by on less sleep. Lately I How Many of These 51 Spiritual Awakening Symptoms do YOU Have?have been experiencing huge waves of energy running into my body from the crown. It feels good, but it keeps me awake for a long time, then subsides. Advice: Get used to it. Make peace with it and don’t worry about getting enough sleep (which often causes more insomnia). You will be able to make it through the day if you hold thoughts of getting just what you need. You can also request your Higher Self to give you a break now and then and give you a good, deep night’s sleep. If you can’t go back to sleep right away, use the waking moments to meditate, read poetry, write in your journal or look at the moon. Your body will adjust to the new pattern.

2. Activity at the crown of the head: Tingling, itching, prickly, crawling sensations along the scalp and/or down the spine...

5 Spiritual Practices That Will Transform Your Life!

Practice 2: Go Into The Now

Its so easy to allow thinking to suck up all of our attention to go through an entire day just daydreaming. As convincing and enticing our thoughts may be, the truth is that thought has no essential reality. Thoughts are just voices that arise in our minds, and almost all of them are dedicated to past or possible future situations which don’t actually exist in reality. If you all of a sudden couldn’t speak English, you wouldn’t understand anything your mind was telling you, and you would probably be the most peaceful you have ever been. What does this tell us about the nature of the voices in our head? That they only have power over our emotions when we give reality to them.

Marbling is the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to paper.
The special tools of the trade are brushes of horsehair bound to straight rose twigs, a deep tray made of unknotted pinewood, natural earth pigments, cattle gall and tragacanth.

5 pieces of advice for coping with tough times

“Sometimes to self-discover you must self-destruct” – Robert M. Drake

They say misfortunes never come singly, and there comes a stage in everybody’s life when this saying becomes a first-person story.

So happened in mine. I’ve had the most amazing summer, half an year full of travelling, meeting incredible people, making friendships I believe will last forever, broadening my points of view, enriching my mind while getting to know other cultures and gathering tons of stories to tell. But when summer was over, so was my happiness. With the change of weather, there was an accident that completely changed the season inside of me, too. Of course, it came with several other ill-fated occurrences that made me question myself how much more bullshit I can take. A few of the most important people in my life were going through a whole lot of pain and there was nothing I could do to help them. This was one of those moments when you think it would be easier to have happened to you rather than watch your beloved ones suffer. It wasn’t long before I reached the point of desperation beyond which I had turned into rude, disrespectful, inactive person. I was not only unhelpful but I was also on my way to push people away from me.

10 Signs You Have Found Your Soulmate

feature_image_template

“Your soul mate makes you feel entirely intact, like no piece is missing from the puzzle. A life partner, on the other hand, can be a great supporter and long-time companion, but is limited in his or her capacity to enrich your spirit.” ~ Dr. Carmen Harra

Soul Mates. Soul Reminders. Soul Connections.

We hear about it, read about it and some of us are lucky enough to experience it.

Soul mates differ from life partners. Some people, not ever encountering a soul mate or soul connection, settle down with a life partner. These relationships can be very satisfying. They are often built on mutual trust, respect and friendship.

UN Says Small Farms and Organic Practices Can Feed the World

feature_image_template

By Dr. Nafeez Ahmed

Governments must shift subsidies and research funding from agro-industrial monoculture to small farmers using ‘agroecological’ methods, according to the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. And as Nafeez Ahmed notes, her call coincides with a new agroecology initiative within the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation.

Modern industrial agricultural methods can no longer feed the world, due to the impacts of overlapping environmental and ecological crises linked to land, water and resource availability.

The stark warning comes from the new United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Prof Hilal Elver, in her first public speech since being appointed in June.

“Food policies which do not address the root causes of world hunger would be bound to fail”, she told a packed audience in Amsterdam.

One billion people globally are hungry, she declared, before calling on governments to support a transition to “agricultural democracy” which would empower rural small farmers.

One Buddha Teaching That Will Tell You More About Yourself

By Andrew Barker

No-Self

In Buddhism one of the ‘Three Characteristics’ is No-Self (the other two are impermanence and suffering which are closely associated with this). This refers to the illusion of reality having a permanent and separate self.

There is this notion that there is a permanent “I” or “me,” which is a separate entity that can be found. The obvious assumption of we are our body sounds good until we look at it and say “this is my body,” which implies at that moment that whatever owns the body wasn’t the body. The observer and the observed; duality denies our body being what we are. It is also in a state of impermanence, and at a sensate level it is made up of energy flickering at a similar rate to reality.
