Pluto sends planetary scientists back to the drawing board

Today, physicist Wal Thornhill continues his discussion of NASA’s New Horizons mission to the dwarf planet Pluto. The mission has already provided a number of surprises for planetary scientists.

The tiny planet’s geological activity, its apparent age, the stunning features on its moons and more all defy many fundamental ideas in planetary science.

As principal investigator Alan Stern recently stated, Pluto is “going to send a lot of geophysicists back to the drawing board.” But are these discoveries surprising from an Electric Universe perspective?

Open letter: we must stop killer robots before they are built

More than 1,000 of the leading researchers in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics have signed and published an open letter calling for a ban on offensive autonomous weapons, also known colloquially as “killer robots”.

The letter, published July 27, 2015, has also been signed by many technologists and experts, including SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, physicist Stephen Hawking, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Skype co-founder Jaan Talinn and linguist and activist Noam Chomsky.

Musk, Hawking and Wozniak have all recently warned about the dangers that AI poses to mankind. Though it has to be said, Wozniak thinks humans will be fine if robots take over the world; we’ll just become their pets.

The open letter urges the UN to support a ban on offensive autonomous weapons systems. This follows the April meeting of the Convention on Conventional Weapons held at the UN in Geneva discussing such an idea.

People near fracking wells show higher hospitalization rates

Over the past ten years in the United States, unconventional gas and oil drilling using hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has experienced a meteoric increase. Since well drilling requires an influx of water, materials and workers into yotherwise rural and remote areas, the question has been: could air, water and noise pollution negatively impact on the health of nearby residents?

study published last year suggested that hydraulic fracturing and proximity to active well drilling are associated with congenital heart disease and low birth weight newborns.

In research from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University published this week in PLoS One, my colleagues and I found that hospitalizations for heart conditions, neurologic illness and other maladies were higher among people who live near unconventional gas and oil drilling.

The finding suggests that these people are exposed to stressors, such as toxic substances and noise, that can lead to a higher rates of hospitalizations.<...

Evidence of the electromagnetic Sun - Earth connection

At the recent Thunderbolts Project EU2015 Conference: Paths of Discovery, Dr. Donald Scott presented new groundbreaking evidence of the electromagnetic connection between the Earth and the Sun.

The electric universe theory states that the Sun is in essence an electrical discharge phenomenon, powered by electric currents flowing along the arm of the galaxy. Electrical circuitry connects the Sun and all planets, including the Earth, driving climate, weather, and Earth’s auroras.

The telltale sign of Birkeland currents at the poles of planets is counter rotational motions in atmospheric phenomena.

In this Space News, Dr. Scott discusses the new, visual evidence that Birkeland currents from the Sun are the cause of Earth’s auroras.

China evacuates 865 000 people ahead of Typhoon "Chan-hom" landfall

Around 865 000 people have been evacuated from the coastal areas of Zhejiang province, China ahead of Typhoon "Chan-hom" landfall.  The typhoon is expected to hit land Saturday afternoon between the coastal cities of Rui’an and Zhoushan, south of Shanghai. Chinese Meteorological Administration has issued a red warning for the province.

Authorities have also ordered 28 764 ships back to ports, canceled all flights into and out of Zhoushan along with 400 flights elsewhere in the region. More than 100 trains between the region's cities are not operating.

During the last 24 hours, Chan-hom has been moving in the East China Sea in a NW direction, causing 20 injuries in southern Japanese islands, and reached Chinese coastal areas close to Ningbo (Zhejiang province) as of 00:00 UTC on July 11.

At the time, the typhoon had a wind speed of approximately 167 km/h (104 mph) which made it a Category 2 tropical cyclone.

A five star, doubly-eclipsing star system discovered

Astronomers at the Open University have discovered the first quintuple star system containing two eclipsing binary stars. While scientists think that about a third of stars are found in pairs or multiple systems, to find five stars connected to each other is very rare.

The unusual star system was originally detected in archived data from the SuperWASP (Wide Angle Search for Planets) project, which uses relatively small and low-cost cameras in the Canary Islands and South Africa to image almost the whole sky every few minutes.  Over many years, its measurements of the brightness of individual stars have been assembled into light curves - plots of brightness against time - for some 30 million sources in the Milky Way.

Night sky guide for July 2015

A spectacular conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will be visible on July 1 with the two planets appearing extremely close, only 0.3 degrees apart.

Several weak meteor showers this month will set stage for Perseids, one of the most popular annual meteor showers expected to reach its peak on August 13.

The first full moon of the month falls on July 2, this full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Buck Moon. This moon has also been known as the Full Thunder Moon and the Full Hay Moon.

The Delta Aquarids are scheduled for July 28 and 29. This is an average meteor shower usually producing up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. Unfortunately, the nearly full moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year.

  • July 1 - Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. A spectacular conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will be visible in the evening sky. The two bright planets will be extremely close, appearing only 0.3 degrees apart. Look for this impressive pairing in the western sky just after sunset.

Fiery space debris re-entry recorded over Southeastern US

A bright fiery object was observed traveling almost horizontally over Southeastern United States around 05:30 UTC on June 29, 2015 (01:30 EDT).

The object was visible for more than 45 seconds and was described by many as having multiple colors and breaking up in pieces. It was traveling from the SW to the NE over Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

This was most likely the early re-entry of Russian SL-6 Rocket Body 2, a part of Cosmos 2196 Missile Early Warning system, which was launched in 1992 and was predicted to re-enter over the Pacific Ocean at 09:59 UTC (± 1 hours) on June 29, 2015.

According to The Aerospace Corporation, SL-6 Rocket Body 2 re-entered at 05:30 UTC on June 29, much earlier than expected (as indicated by the sightings). The reasons are unknown and additional information is unavailable, they said.

World stock markets tumble as new phase of Greece debt crisis begins

World stock markets have tumbled on Monday, June 29, 2015 after Greece failed to reach a deal with its foreign creditors over the weekend and imposed new strict measures to deal with their debt crisis.

Just before 01:00 UTC on June 29, Greek government closed all country's banks and capped daily ATM withdrawals at 60 Euros.

The move was preceded by the announcement of a July 5 referendum on austerity measures demanded by their creditors.

The government said all banks will remain closed until after the referendum and assured they will reopen them on Tuesday, July 7.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras appealed for calm, insisting that Greeks’ savings and pensions are safe.

European shares took a hammering in early deals on Monday, with Southern European banks especially badly hit, Reuters reported.

Earth-directed full-halo CME erupts from Region 2371

Active Region 2371, now classifiead as Beta-Gamma-Delta and located near the center of the disk, erupted with two M-class solar flares - M2.0 and M2.7 - early on June 21, 2015 producing Earth-directed full-halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). Arrival is expected on June 23/24.

A Type II and IV radio emission (starting at 02:24 UTC, estimated velocity 682 km/s) were associated with the event. Type IV emissions occur in association with major eruptions on the Sun and are typically associated with strong CMEs and solar radiation storms.

Additionally, two 10cm radio bursts were registered. A 10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.
