Hmmm…a bit of a mind-blowing insight for me this one.

Look at your hand. Each centimetre of skin has about a thousand individual cells, separated by cell membranes, each in themselves a dependent, though in situ, entirely self-functioning, self-regulating system, and each developed out of each other, one by one – billions upon billions of tiny little self-functioning systems all adjoined and functioning together in perfect graceful co-ordination. Move your hand – wiggle your fingers: see how they work in perfect, instantaneous synchronicity in response to the most subtle, virtually unconscious desire or intention, delivering it more perfectly and more specifically then ever your mind could so quickly conceive…

Now look at your other hand, and your arms together – look at your body and your head and your mouth. Look how ever part of you is a perfectly ordered synchronicity of billions upon billions of highly differentiated, highly specific cells all working in the most breath-taking harmony you could ever imagine. It’s a fucking miracle! Think about it: looking in the mirror, dancing around – some profound co-ordinating intelligence manifesting instantly your vague intentions, your vague whims: it’s just incredible – a breath-taking miracle.

And look at your eyes ready to see it all, understanding it all, understanding what I’m saying in a language shaped by billions upon billions of us human individuals through time, each chipping and chiselling the words in entirely individual voices – and here is us expressing our deepest and most profound inner and outer experiences, needs and desires in perfect deployment from hundreds of thousands of words, each with individual meanings just all working together, spilling out in perfect co-ordination, just as these billions and billions of cells do to make the profound cosmos that is your own individual body, and when you contrast within, you have a perfectly unbroken consciousness which is capable of turning its awareness here, there and everywhere without falter, sewing up all this profound chaos of perfect order into an understanding, a meaning entirely personal to you, standing there in your suite of billions upon billions of individual yet co-ordinating systems, each of them composed of billions upon billions of atoms – a nucleus with electrons zipping around at zillions of miles per hour, or whatever they do: we are a fucking miracle.

And now look at this – the computer on which you read: now contrast to an open field next to a forest next to the sandy beach next to the sea. This computer came out of that – we humans sucked all the materials over time to put together this profoundly well made, functioning system which is still yet utterly crude compared to the barest, simplest bacterial life form. If you are not struck by this reality than I simply cannot understand it at all. I must be mad. This world is an incredible miracle as is everything I see – yet just a few years ago I was walking around feeling everything was dead and empty.

And this is absolutely nothing compared to the reality I’ve experienced, or the reality we haven’t yet experienced or understood – that which is more fundamental, more incredible than anything in our waking life that’s for sure. I was just struck by it all walking through town, and my hair was literally standing on end – because we are on a planet with geological systems that are, really, biology writ large: a perfectly self-regulating atmosphere keeping a constant range of temperature, salinity in the sea water, moisture in the atmosphere and so forth just right for the billions of different species of billions of different individual plants, animals, birds and insects made of billions of tiny little self-regulating systems of cells made of billions of swirling electrons and nucleic protons and neutrons each produced by specific wave-forms on the quantum field that we are, that everything fundamentally is – and it is here that the fundamental reality begins, and our mundane, illusory, because so limited, material experience of it ends. Incredible. Am I mad? I don’t care. My world is a miracle that’s for sure. I’m pretty sure yours is too. [NB, the following is a photo was the inside of my brain when this first struck me...]
