Alexander Belousov and Marina Belousova, researchers at Russia’s Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, lowered a camera into six geysers in the famed Valley of the Geysers on Russia’s volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula. The results provide a new model for understanding how geysers work (The study was published online January 25 in the journal Geology).   The videos, combined with studies of rocks surrounding extinct geysers, revealed that the Kamchatka geysers aren’t fed by long, narrow tubes, as once thought. This exceptional sequence bellow by Virtual Telescope, shows asteroid 2012 DA14, soon after its close approach at about 27500km above the Earth surface. At the imaging time, it was moving at the amazing rate of 2450″/min (0.7deg/min)! The robotic telescope was carefully tuned to track its rapidly changing apparent motion. Asteroid was only 20 degrees above the horizon.   AGI aerospace engineers have used Systems Tool Kit (STK) software to create a simulation based on publically available information showing the trajectory of the meteor, as well as the trajectory of asteroid 2012 DA14, which had a close approach same day....

A weak interplanetary shock was registered by ACE spacecraft at 10:58 UTC on February 16, 2013. This event is not expected to bring widespread geomagnetic disturbances, however, it sparked aurora displays at very high latitudes. The Kp index is currently at 4, very close to minor geomagnetic storm level. Happy February!  It’s been a “minute” since I’ve been here writing.  I will be the first to admit I’ve been a bit “stressed” out lately due to financial pressures and I know that this does nothing for my Spirit, especially when I know it causes writer’s block!  At any rate, I’ve found that I have to only go back to my beginning to REmember why I’m here and what I’m doing so here’s to Gaia…my Mother.
