MANILA, Philippines — Tropical cyclone “Quinta” left at least nine people dead and four missing in a sweep across the Visayas and Bicol regions that sent flash floods rampaging in the lowlands and tens of  thousands fleeing to safer grounds.

The 17th and final storm of the Pacific season, which weakened into a depression and then into a low pressure as of Thursday, blew out into the West Philippine Sea where weathermen said it was likely to dissipate, weakened by cold winds from the northeast monsoon.

A Shining Diamond

diamond

You are My treasure. I turn you over in My hand every day. I look at you. I gaze at you, and I say: "Beautiful." You may argue this for the sake of what? For the sake of argument? I am saying that you are a beautiful hard-at-work soul. Yes, you aspire to greater. Well, then, you shall have it. Keep looking up. Keep looking in My direction. Hold yourself up to Me so that I may see you face to face.

One day, one day soon, you shall recognize the Truth about you, the truth that you are a Shining Diamond, that you are My Shining Diamond. Every day I take you out and hold you up to the sun, and I breathe on you as you would on a pair of glasses. I have a cloth of love that I polish you with. I also polish you with My eyes. And every day I smile on you. Every day My bless-ed smile falls on you.

Meanwhile, you get frazzled. Meanwhile, you are discontent with the Shining Diamond of Myself that I hold in My hand that bears your name.

WASHINGTON (AP) - As 2012 began, winter in the U.S. went AWOL. Spring and summer arrived early with wildfires, blistering heat and drought. And fall hit the eastern third of the country with the ferocity of Superstorm Sandy.

This past year's weather was deadly, costly and record-breaking everywhere — but especially in the United States.

Holiday Temperatures Unseasonably Warm in Germany

Spiegel Online - 12/27/12

Merrymakers hoping for a White Christmas were disappointed in Germany and some parts of Europe this week as a low-pressure front created record-high holiday temperatures. Beer gardens reopened and bathers flocked to nearby lakes.

Rather than shivering as they might during the normal holiday season, these Munich residents can be seen playing croquet at Königsplatz.

Usually at this time of year, the beer garden benches and tables have been placed in storage until the big thaw comes in spring. But instead of a White Christmas, many in Germany have gotten a sunny and bright weather over the past several days.

Farmers, river traffic, communities continue to battle impact of dry weather

Joe White, a corn and soybean farmer in Kane County, says his crop was 25 percent smaller this summer. (José M. Osorio, Chicago Tribune / December 11, 2012)

As in Decembers past, corn and soybean farmer Joe White is busy hauling grain miles from his Kane County farm to sell at corn intake facilities in Chicago and elsewhere. But this year's load is lighter because his crop suffered in the drought.

"I had a 25 percent reduction of corn this year," White said. "The corn was attempting to pollinate during those 100-degree days in July, and the heat interfered with the process. The size of the ear is reduced too."

MIAMI (Reuters) - Record low hauls of stone crabs off the coast of Florida are creating a scarcity of one of the holiday season's favorite seafood delicacies, pushing up prices and sparking a bidding wars among high-end restaurants.

"No question, there is a shortage and people are feeling it," said Roger Duarte, a former investment banker and owner of Miami-based supplier George's Stone Crab. "I have clients calling me who I have never had business with. Everyone is looking for stone crabs anywhere they can get them," he said.
