Apparently, UFO pilots love a good fireworks show. For the second time in a week, an unidentified flying object was spotted hovering near a pyrotechnics display, this time celebrating the birth of Switzerland.

The most famous sighting in the past week was spotted near the Olympics opening ceremonies as the rockets flew over the crowd. This time, a Swiss couple, out to celebrate a national holiday, caught this object floating in the air as the crowd enjoyed the display.

The excited couple, chattering in their native tongue, seem to be more interested in watching this brightly lit object, which does not display normal aircraft running lights, than they do the fireworks show. The UFO is fairly far away, so even zooming in doesn't reveal much detail.

But the picture above does show unusual illumination, looking more like LED or neon, than aircraft navigational lights.

When my oldest child was four weeks old, I took her to my local surgery for a routine check-up. Like most new mothers, I was exhausted. I’d endured a terrifying birth, involving a horribly speedy emergency C-section, followed by a general anaesthetic while my womb was removed from my body to be stitched up.

After a grim hospital stay, back home I’d been flung into the maelstrom of sleepless nights and endless feeding. My baby cried non-stop. So, when a kind-faced GP asked how I was doing, it was hardly surprising that I found myself crying helplessly too.

The new environmentalism: where men must act 'as gods' to save the planet

For the neogreens, science and business will provide while nature can adapt. It is a messsage gaining traction

A society that takes progress as its religion does not look kindly on despair. If you are expected to believe everything will keep getting better, it can be difficult to admit to believing otherwise. This is doubly true for political activists. If you've devoted your life to fighting for a cause, you will probably feel duty bound to continue supporting it, at least in public, however hopeless it may begin to look.

Early on Monday morning, Nasa's Curiosity rover will attempt a hazardous landing on the Martian surface. It will take seven minutes from the capsule hitting the top of the atmosphere at six kilometres per second to the van-sized vehicle being placed gently on the ground.

A heat shield to withstand heating to 1,600C, the largest and strongest supersonic parachute yet built, and finally a new piece of kit called the Sky Crane will all be used.
