Map of Colorado fires June 23, 2013

On the map above we show the large wildfires in Colorado that are still active. The three southernmost are still spreading, while the Bull Gulch, Lime Gulch, and Wild Rose Fires have been relatively quiet for the last day or two. The acres burned are also shown.

The Papoose and West Fork fires have now been combined into the “West Fork Complex”.  We have more information about the West Fork Complex and the East Peak Fire.

Severe weather and polar blast hit New Zealand

Magikalspirit's picture

The watchers-June 22 2013

New Zealand was hit by the large low pressure system bringing destructive storms that have swept over the country in the last 24 hours, damaging houses, roads and seawalls, as well as closing dozens of schools and leaving thousands without power. Luckily, fierce storm is now showing signs of ease.

Polar blast dumped record early season snow in New Zealand. Heavy snow has fallen in parts of the South Island, cutting off some communities. Areas like North Canterbury and inland parts of northern Southland and Otago have already had some big snow totals.

The deep Antarctic air swept across the country backed by the band of torrential showers - many with hail, thunderstorms and damaging winds. Hail was unusually heavy for Auckland area. A thunderstorm that moved through from the Tasman Sea

Supermoon: How will it affect us?

Desert Gypsy's picture

6/22/13, Desert Gypsy- GFP Earth Changes Reporter

Does the full moon affect humanity, in particularly a Supermoon? Personally, I notice an increase in insomnia, and also changes in the behavior of animals. Once we had a pig butchered, and observed a most pecular site in that the pig refused to die. Sorry that's not something most people want to talk about, but the gentleman who performed the job; who had 30 years experience in the field, stated that he noticed this ocurrance all the time during full moons. I would attribute it to an increase in energies and the change in magnetic pull on the earth. This supermoon, in particularly, is accompanied by summer solstice energies and solar flares. So things could get fun!

A lack of sleep most certainly affects humans as police have reported a rise in crime rates. Scientifically speaking, I can find little evidence to support anonmalies, but that could be because few studies have been done. Subjectively speaking...well you be the judge of that! Cause of Last Year's Record Surface Melt on Greenland

Desert Gypsy's picture

Accuweather.com - 6/21/13

Key excerpts from the University of Sheffield report......

"Our research found that a ‘heat dome' of warm southerly winds over the ice sheet led to widespread surface melting. These jet stream changes over Greenland do not seem to be well captured in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) computer model predictions of climate change, and this may indicate a deficiency in these models. According to our current understanding, the unusual atmospheric circulation and consequent warm conditions of summer 2012 do not appear to be climatically representative of future ‘average' summers predicted later this century.

"Taken together, our present results strongly suggest that the main forcing of the extreme GrIS surface melt in July 2012 was atmospheric, linked with changes in the summer North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Greenland Blocking Index (GBI, a high pressure system centred over Greenland) and polar jet stream which favoured southerly warm air advection along the western coast.

A withering early summer heart wave has sent temperatures soaring throughout central Europe since Monday.

Wednesday, excessive heat spread northward from the Alps to nearly all of Germany, where some hot spots topped 35 degrees C (95 degrees F). For a wide area surrounding the Alps, it was the third straight day of readings hitting 30 to 35 degrees C (86-95 degrees F).

Helicopters and close to 10,000 soldiers have been deployed to rescue tourists and pilgrims stranded after floods caused by torrential monsoon rains hit the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand at the weekend.

More than 22,400 people have so far been rescued, as the military takes advantage of clearer weather, but another 62,000 are still stranded, the Home Ministry said in a statement.
