In January we saw some increased seismic activity worldwide. The strongest earthquake was registered as M 7.5 and it hit Southeastern Alaska on January 5, 2013. M 6.8 hit Atacama region in Chile on January 30, 2013. Sharp increase in seismic activity was recorded around Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands in last week of January. Swarm of M5+ and M6+ earthquakes struck the area. Ending with January 31, worldwide seismographs recorded 72 M5+, 6 M6+ and one M7+ earthquakes.  Commentary By Lucas : Interesting if you wanna glow in the dark, the domino effect seems to kick in.  The closing of nuclear reactors seem to follow each other up at a fast speed. Maybe the new paradigm is ringing through. Will all nuclear plants be closed soon? Indications are that in the UK a big party dropped out of building a new plant. Germany closing all down in time as decided already some time ago. Is this the begin of the end of nuclear power.  And maybe will cold-nuclear fusion, zero-point energy and natural energy from sun, wind, water, etc,  take over total and be made free for all.

Hot weather to test control lines around Aberfeldy fire

Fire authorities say high temperatures predicted over the next few days will test control lines around the two major fires burning in Victoria.

A total fire ban is in force today in the South West, North Central, Central and Wimmera districts.

Big Story Weather from February 5: Another Clipper system pushed through the Great Lakes yesterday bringing more snow to the region. A weak frontal boundary pushed through Northern Florida yesterday which brought some showers to the region. Another frontal boundary pushed away from the Pacific Northwest after bringing a few showers and mountain snows.

Weather Outlook for February 6: Low pressure moving through the Northeast will create a few lake effect snow showers along the Eastern Lakes. High pressure over the Great Lakes will extend southward into the Mid-Atlantic region. Low pressure developing over the Colorado Rockies will push showers all the way up into Nebraska overnight and also eastward along the Gulf Coast. High pressure over the West Coast will bring nice weather to the region. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

San Francisco Has Driest January on Record

A lack of storms dipping to the south that started the year over California continues in the Bay Area.

San Francisco International Airport recorded only 0.20 of an inch of rain during January 2013, and as of Feb. 5, no rainfall has been added to this amount.

Storm Unleashes High Winds, Snow in UK, Ireland

A storm early this week has been unleashing extreme winds, snow and battering surf to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Blizzard conditions were stirred across the Scottish Highlands Monday night into Tuesday morning. Traffic Scotland reports difficult and dangerous travel conditions across portions of Scotland due to snow and ice-packed roadways and high winds. Traffic was down to one lane along some highways as a result.

2 Great Lakes Hit Record Low Water Levels

The sun rises over Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan, which – along with Lake Huron – has hit its lowest water level ever recorded.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Two of the Great Lakes have hit their lowest water levels ever recorded, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday, capping more than a decade of below-normal rain and snowfall and higher temperatures that boost evaporation.

Measurements taken last month show Lake Huron and Lake Michigan have reached their lowest ebb since record keeping began in 1918, and the lakes could set additional records over the next few months, the corps said. The lakes were 29 inches below their long-term average and had declined 17 inches since January 2012.

Torrential rains in Pakistan kill 33 since weekend
Days of torrential rain have killed 34 people in Pakistan, mostly on the northwestern border with Afghanistan, officials said Wednesday.

The worst-hit region was Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the northwest where 25 people were killed and 57 injured as a result of heavy rain from Sunday to Tuesday, the provincial disaster management authority said.
