The track and intensity of Super Typhoon Haiyan are overlaid. Haiyan passed directly over large areas of sub-surface water that were 4 - 5°C above average in temperature, which likely contributed to the storm's explosive deepening. sinkhole florida dunedin

A sinkhole opened the backyard of a home in Dunedin, Fla., on Thursday.

WTSP reports the family that lives in the home was safely evacuated. About a half dozen other nearby residences were also evacuated.

Images captured by the station show a large depression in a yard that has partially swallowed a boat.

According to the Associated Press, a patio has also partially collapsed into the hole, and a nearby pool appears to be structurally compromised.

The sinkhole was said to be 12 feet wide when authorities arrived at the scene, but WTSP reported it was 35 feet in diameter and 30 feet deep.

2013 Already Among 10 Warmest Years On Record: Report

By: Terrell Johnson, 11/13/2013

Even though this year isn't yet in the books, 2013 is on track to be the seventh-warmest year since modern temperature records began in 1850, the World Meteorological Organization reported today in conjunction with the United Nations-led global climate talks underway this week in Poland. Global land and sea surface temperatures were about 0.86 degrees Fahrenheit above the 1961-1990 average for the period between January and September of this year, tying them with the same time frame from 2003 as the seventh-warmest such period on record.

Warmer temperatures were most extreme in Australia in 2013, the report notes, in contrast with 2012 when the United States experienced much of the world's record high annual temperatures. Temperatures this year are in line with the trend since 2000, said WMO Secretary-General Michael Jarraud, adding that the 2000 to 2010 period was the warmest decade on record so far.

Farmers told to adapt to climate change

ABC, By: Cath McAloon, 11/14/2013

The latest world weather report, indicating the globe is on track to record one of its warmest years, should send a strong message to farmers to plan for climate adaptation, according to an expert in agriculture and climate change. The United Nation's World Meteorological Organisation is reporting 2013 is expected to rank among the top ten warmest years since modern weather records began in 1850. Blair Trewin, a climatologist with the Bureau of Meteorology says record hot temperatures in Australia have significantly contributed to the overall result.

"Australia was probably the most exceptional part of the world this year," Dr Trewin said. "The year so far in Australia has been the warmest on record by a fairly substantial margin. Up to the end of October we were running 0.24 of a degree ahead of the previous record year, which means that unless November and December are significantly cooler, 2013 will be Australia's warmest year on record."

~ Space Weather Update~ WAITING FOR THE NEXT FLARE

Lia's picture

WHAT WENT WRONG ON MARS? Mars was once on track to become a thriving Earth-like planet, yet today it is an apparently lifeless wasteland. A NASA spacecraft named MAVEN will soon journey to Mars to find out what went wrong on the Red Planet. Get the full story and a video from Science@NASA.

WAITING FOR THE NEXT FLARE: Solar activity has been low for 24+ hours, but the forecast calls for flares. Two large, complex sunspots are transiting the Earthside of the sun with mixed-polarity magnetic fields that harbor energy for strong eruptions. The next big flare will probably come from one of these two circled regions:
