By: Wunderground.com, 01/19/2014

GLENDORA, Calif. -- Hundreds of residents who fled a wildfire in the suburbs of Los Angeles returned home Saturday as red-flag warnings of extremely dangerous fire conditions expired, but officials say that bone-dry winter conditions remain a threat for the region. The last wave of evacuees in the Azusa neighborhood known as Mountain Cove, about 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, were allowed to return home Saturday evening. "It's exhilarating ... very thankful (to the firefighters) for saving our community," resident Alexandra Ramos told KNBC-TV.

CANBERRA, Australia — More than 90 wildfires were burning over Australia's New South Wales state on Sunday, but the danger has ebbed in neighboring Victoria and South Australia states. Many of the 93 fires burning across New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, were sparked by overnight lightning strikes, state Country Fire Service spokesman Matt Sun said. At least three houses had been destroyed near the village of Minimbah, west of Sydney, he said.

An alert in parts of New Caledonia has been lifted, with Cyclone June downgraded to a Tropical Depression as it continues to weaken. However President Harold Martin has urged his people to remain vigilant as the storm could still widen, and it's estimated to be tracking within 150 kilometres of the capital, Noumea. More heavy rain, coupled with a risk of strong westerly winds, is expected to affect the French territory until Sunday evening. Duty forecaster at the Fiji Meteorological Service in Nadi, Terry Atalifo, says the windspeed near the centre of the cyclone is estimated to be around 75 kilometres per hour. The northern region of New Caledonia has not reported any damage despite facing strong winds earlier. However, at all times, the feeling you wish to achieve in the future is available to you, right here and right now.

~Space Weather Update~QUIET SUNDAY

Lia's picture

QUIET SUNDAY: A phalanx of new sunspots rotating over the sun's southeastern limb was expected to boost solar activity this weekend. So far, however, the spots have not produced strong flares. Solar activity is low. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

MYSTERIOUS MOON HALOS OVER FINLAND: Luminous halos around the Moon are nothing unusual, especially in wintertime Finland where the air is so often filled with ice. Crystals of frozen H2O catch the moonlight and bend it into a circular ring of light. A few nights ago, however, Sauli Koski of Muonio, Finland, witnessed a halo that was not circular, but elliptical:

"On Jan. 15th, the weather changed. As the temperature dropped from -7C to -37C, there were all kinds of ice halos to photograph," says Koski. "The best and rarest were these elliptical forms that lasted more than 20 minutes."

CHANCE OF STORMS: A minor CME expected to hit Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 17th is late, but NOAA forecasters still think it is coming. They estimate a 40% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Jan. 18th in response to the tardy impact. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

~Space Weather Update~AURORA, BOOM!

Lia's picture

CHANCE OF STORMS: NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Jan. 17th when a minor CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for moonlit auroras. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

AURORA, BOOM! On Jan. 11th, Bjørn Hugo Hansen of Øverbygd, Norway, observed an explosive display of auroras--with sound effects. "The temperature was -27 C, and I was standing on the ice by our cabin. In the distance I could hear cracking sounds from the ice, a strange sound like a mix of whale bubbles hitting the ice and a small earthquake. This happens often. I believe it is stronger tonight, though, because of a big drop in temperature. Faint auroras were dancing quietly overhead when I spoke to myself -- 'Come on Aurora – give me all you got.' And BOOM! The sky exploded behind me." This is what he saw:

"Lady Aurora twisted around the sky, she threw her bridal veil all around," continues Hansen. "I was in ecstasy … and as if that was not enough,  the ice under me made a large DRUN! I had never heard the sound of the ice crack this close before, almost right under me. It was an enormous sound. A thin crack 5mm wide rushed across the lake. Then it became quiet and Aurora disappeared. AMAZING!"
