~ Space Weather Update~ Cme Impact, M7 Class Flare, Huge Sunspot Targets Earth

Lia's picture

CME IMPACT: A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 7th at approximately 1500 UT. The glancing impact did not immediately spark a geomagnetic storm. However, storm conditions could develop as Earth travels through the CME's wake. High latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

HUGE SUNSPOT TARGETS EARTH: One of the biggest sunspots in years is crossing the center of the solar disk, putting Earth in the way of potential eruptions. Rocky Raybell photographed the active region named "AR1944" yesterday from his backyard in Keller, Washington:

The sprawling sunspot contains dozens of dark cores, the largest big enough to swallow Earth three times over. This makes it an easy target for amateur solar telescopes -- or even regular cameras. Raybell used an SX40 digital camera on a tripod whole holding a Baader solar filer over the lens to capture his image. Photo details may be found here.

What Is A Solar Flare?

~Space Weather Update~ INCOMING CME, UPDATED

Lia's picture

FLARES LIKELY TODAY: Giant sunspot AR1944 has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for potent Earth-directed eruptions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 75% chance of M-class flares and a 30% chance of X-flares on Jan. 6th. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

INCOMING CME, UPDATED: A coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading for Earth. The cloud raced away from the sun during the late hours of Jan 4th following a long-duration M4-class solar flare from big sunspot AR1944. SOHO (the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) recorded the explosion:

'Polar vortex' pushes dangerously cold temps into U.S. Midwest

OdiStar's picture

Montreal Gazette by Tammy Webber and Kerry Lester, AP

CHICAGO - A whirlpool of frigid, dense air known as a "polar vortex" descended Monday into much of the United States, pummelling parts of the country with a dangerous cold that could break decades-old records with wind chill warnings stretching from Montana to Alabama.

For a big chunk of the Midwest, the extremely cold temperatures were moving in behind another winter wallop: more than a foot (30 centimetres) of snow and high winds that made travelling treacherous. Officials closed schools in cities including Chicago, St. Louis and Milwaukee and warned residents to stay indoors and avoid the frigid cold altogether.

‘Polar vortex’ to hit US Midwest and Northeast with record freezing temperatures

The American Midwest and Northeast are preparing for a "polar vortex," a megastorm that is expected to bring record low temperatures on Monday. So far extreme weather conditions have claimed at least 16 lives, paralyzed travel and caused power shortage.

For those exposed to the inclement conditions frostbite and hypothermia will be a danger as – 31°C is expected in North Dakota, - 35 °C in Minnesota, and - 26 degrees below Celsius in Indianapolis and Chicago. Adding the wind chill factor, the temperature could feel as low as – 56 °C.

Winter Storm Hercules: 9 Deaths Blamed on Extreme Winter Weather

Silver's picture

By: Sean Breslin, 01/03/2014

Winter Storm Hercules unleashed more heavy snow, ferocious winds and crippling cold in the Northeast and New England Friday morning, refusing to take it easy on the highly-populated I-95 corridor. At least nine people have died and thousands have lost power to their homes and businesses. "Each of our named storms has its own personality," said Tom Niziol, winter weather expert for The Weather Channel. "With Hercules, if you live in New England, you can feel the power. It's not only the snow, but it's the wind and the cold, too."

Coldest Arctic Outbreak in Midwest Since the 1990s; East, South to Shiver

Silver's picture

By: Jon Erdman, 01/03/2014

Sunday AM Lows

Low temperature records in one of the nation's coldest month in the U.S., particularly in the Midwest, are harder to crack. It's a pretty, uh, low bar, so to speak. That said, one of coldest Arctic outbreaks in the past two decades is ready to plunge into the nation's Midwest, while also sweeping its shivering air into the East and South. Let's get to the bitter forecast details. The bitter cold reinforcement arrives this weekend.

Europe Storm 2014: Britain, France Lashed By High Winds, Waves and Tides

Silver's picture

By: Wunderground.com, 01/03/2014

LONDON -- High winds, waves and tides lashed the western coasts of Britain and France on Friday, flooding seaside towns and low-lying areas. Wales, southwest England and Northern Ireland were the worst-hit U.K. regions by the latest in a recent series of extreme winter storms. Parts of northwestern France also suffered flooding. "This is the latest in a series of powerful storm systems that have pounded the UK and Ireland since Christmas Eve," said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. "A break is expected on Saturday before yet another storm approaches Sunday with more soaking rainfall and gusty winds." A combination of heavy rain, winds gusting up to 90 mph and exceptionally high tides sent water flooding Friday into several British seaside towns. Some western rivers also burst their banks.
