Eastern Oregon wildfires burn 40,000 acres

VALE, Ore. -- Authorities say some campers along the Owyhee River in eastern Oregon have been evacuated as a precaution after lightning touched off three wildfires in Malheur County.

Federal fire officials say a fire near the Owyhee Dam started Monday night, and the fire area grew overnight to 40,000 acres.

A seismic swarm has been occurring at the volcano during the past 24 hours, including a magnitude 3.0 earthquake yesterday. This could indicate a magmatic intrusion happening at depth, but so far, no unusual surface activity has been noted. On the other hand, Momotombo volcano is one of Nicaragua's most frequently active, with 10 recorded historic eruptions between 1524 and 1905, so new activity would not be a big surprise.

At least one person has reportedly died and dozens more have been treated for exhaustion and dehydration as a heat wave continues to cause problems across western America.

Air-conditioned "cooling centres" have been set up in California, Nevada and Arizona, as officials warn the high temperatures could be life-threatening.

New York: Massive earthquakes can cause far-off volcanoes to sink by as much as 15 centimetres, according to new research.

The magnitude-9.0 earthquake that struck Japan in 2011 caused volcanoes as far as 200 km from the epicentre to sink up to 15 centimetres, researchers found.
