STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM IN PROGRESS: A geomagnetic storm is in progress on June 28-29 as Earth passes through a region of south-pointing magnetism in the solar wind. The storm has sparked Northern Lights photographed in the USA as far south as Kansas and many many other US states. Christian Begeman sends this picture from a farm outside Hartford, South Dakota:

"A clear sky allowed me to the Northern Lights dancing in southeast South Dakota around the midnight hour tonight," says Begeman. "It was quite the show."

High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras in the hours ahead. Solar wind conditions continue to favor geomagnetic activity. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

The Mystery of Death Valley's 'Sailing' Stones

Desert Gypsy's picture

Weather.com, 6/29/13- Terrell Johnson

On the windswept desert floor of Death Valley, there's a place where rocks move across the ground all by themselves. No one has ever seen them move, and no one knows how they do it.

No one would know they move at all if it weren't for the trails they leave behind in Racetrack Playa (pronounced PLY-uh), a nearly 3-mile-long stretch of flat ground in Death Valley National Park that has attracted scientists, researchers and curious observers ever since the stones were first discovered nearly a century ago.

The June 2013 Black Forest fire was the most destructive in Colorado’s history. The fire charred more than 14,000 acres, killed two people, destroyed 509 homes, and devastated a wooded suburb of Colorado Springs.

This image of the Black Forest fire’s burn scar was acquired by NASA’s Terra satellite on June 21, 2013. Vegetation-covered land is red in the false-color image, which includes both visible and infrared light. Patches of unburned forest are bright red. Unburned grasslands are pink. The darkest gray and black areas are the most severely burned. Buildings, roads, and other developed areas appear light gray and white

Nicarauga’s Telica volcano shaken by new earthquake swarm

theextinctionprotocol-June 28,2013

June 28, 2013 NICARAUGA - A new earthquake swarm started this morning, visible on INETER’s seismograms. Telica has six cones, the tallest of which is 1061 meters high. There is a double crater at the top, 700 meters wide and 120 meters deep. Telica has erupted frequently since the Spanish Era. The most recent eruption was in 2011. In terms of explosive force, Telica’s largest eruption has been rated with a VEI of 4. That eruption occurred in 1529. One of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes, Telica has erupted frequently, and ash from those frequent eruptions keeps the slopes of its cone bare of vegetation.  –Volcano Discovery, Wikipedia

Tony de Brum, assistant minister to the Marshalls president, has told Radio Australia's he is nearly 70 years old and does not remember a season like the current one."The elders tell us that there have been droughts like this before, but I don't think anybody has ever seen it where it's it's so wet," he said.

"The problem here has been with the flooding from the swells that have come in from the south. So we have a situation with extremely dry drought up north, and extremely wet floods down south. Very weird weather."
