ELECTRON STORM: In the past 24 hours, the flux of high-energy electrons swarming around Earth has increased more than tenfold. The source of this "electron storm" is a 600 km/s stream of solar wind buffeting Earth's magnetic field. NOAA cautions satellite operators that "satellite systems may experience significant charging" in response to accumulated electrons. SWx alerts: text, voice.

NOCTILUCENT CLOUD SEASON BEGINS

Desert Gypsy's picture

Spaceweather.com- 5/27/13

Over the weekend, sky watchers in northern Europe and Canada spotted electric-blue tendrils of light reaching out of the western sky at sunset. This signals the beginning of the 2013 season for noctilucent clouds (NLCs). Photographer Silvar Mehik sends this picture from the island of Saaremaa in Estonia:

NLCs are Earth's highest clouds. In the upper atmosphere, 80+ km high, tiny ice crystals nucleate around meteoroids and other aerosols. When the crystals catch the rays of the setting sun, they glow electric blue. For reasons that are not fully understood, these highest and coldest of clouds form during the warmest months on the ground--late spring and summer.

Planetary trio – Mercury, Venus, Jupiter – still close at dusk May 27

Planetary trio featuring Mercury, Venus and Jupiter as they appear after sunset on May 27.

Did you see the three planets after sunset last night? Jupiter, Venus and Mercury formed a near-perfect equilateral triangle in the western twilight sky. Tonight – May 27, 2013 – the triangle is not so equal-sided, but you can still witness the planetary trio that pops out over the western horizon about 45 to 75 minutes after sunset. Don’t miss these three planets! You’ll be looking over the sunset point on the horizon at evening dusk. Be sure to find an unobstructed horizon in the direction of sunset, and if you have them, bring along binoculars to enhance the view of the three planets.

Alaska Glaciers Are a Major Contributor to Global Sea Level Rise

Desert Gypsy's picture

Accuweather.com - 5/27/13, 5/25/13

New, in-depth research on glacier mass losses and their contribution to the rising sea level between 2003 and 2009 shows that the world's mountain glaciers have contributed just as much melt water to rising sea level as the the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.

Much of Alaska glacier ice is located near the coast, making it more susceptible to climate fluctuations, according to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

Climate change drowning Senegal, 'Venice of Africa'

Ruins of houses are seen on May 7, 2013 on the beach of the village of Doun Baba Dieye, northern Senegal

Ruins of houses are seen on May 7, 2013 on the beach of the village of Doun Baba Dieye, northern Senegal. The city of St Louis is plagued by flooding during the rainy season and scientists say climate change is exacerbating the problem.

Ameth Diagne was asleep when the first waves lapped at his back door, the lukewarm, salty water seeping into his bedroom an impassive portent of the final days of his 650-year-old fishing community.

He had kept his two wives and many of his 16 children with him long after the neighbours had fled, in the vain hope that his once-bustling, tenacious west African village could survive the remorseless advance of the Atlantic Ocean.

Near Earth Asteroids

Desert Gypsy's picture

Spaceweather.com-5/26/13

Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.

On May 26, 2013 there were 1397 potentially hazardous asteroids.

Closest three planets until 2021

This photo from Mike O’Neal shows Jupiter, Venus and Mercury on May 25, 2013, one day before they are closest

The planetary trio has begun! That’s when three planets fit within a circle with a 5-degree, or smaller, diameter. Jupiter, Venus and Mercury meet that definition of a planetary trio from May 24-29, 2013. And they’ll be even closer – all be about 3 degrees apart – as evening dusk falls on May 25, 26 and 27. May 26 is the closest grouping of these three planets until the year 2021. If your sky is clear – and your horizon unobstructed – look for the planets in the west as soon as the sun sets on these May 2013 evenings. You’ll easily find the two brightest planets there: Venus and Jupiter. The innermost planet Mercury is fainter, but you’ll see it. Some are calling this late May 2013 event a triple conjunction, but a more fitting and descriptive name is planetary trio.

San Antonio flooding kills 1; 200-plus rescued

Desert Gypsy's picture

Cbsnews.com - 5/26/13

SAN ANTONIO Torrential rains swamped San Antonio with flash floods on Saturday, leaving at least one person dead as emergency workers in boats rushed to rescue more than 200 residents stranded in cars and homes.

"It was pretty crazy," said Gera Hinojosa, a valet parking cars downtown after the storm. "It was pretty unexpected. We hardly got any warning about it."

For one woman, the storm turned fatal rapidly: Trapped in her car, she climbed to the roof but was swept away in floodwaters, said San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Christian Bove. Her body was later found against a fence, he said. Her name was not immediately released.
