~ Space Weather Update~ Chance of Storms, Solar Wind Remains Above 700, Amazing

CHANCE OF STORMS: NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on June 2nd as a high-speed (700 km/s) solar wind stream buffets Earth's magnetic field. The warning comes on the heels of a lengthy G2-class geomagnetic storm on May 31-June 1 sparked by the arrival of an interplanetary shock wave. The source of the shock is unknown. Current speculation focuses on a corotating interaction region (CIR)--that is, a shock-like transition zone between high- and low-speed solar wind streams. Whatever it was, the impact ignited some beautiful auroras, described below. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

AURORAS IN THE USA: On June 1st, Northern Lights spilled across the Canadian border into more than a dozen US states, turning the sky purple and green as far south as Colorado and Nebraska. Subscribers to the Space Weather Alert System (text, voice) knew the storm was coming, but others were surprised:

Here are Mercury, Venus and Jupiter as seen on June 1, 2013 from our friend Jean Baptiste Feldmann in France. He wrote, “Les trois planètes alignées ce soir. Quelques secondes plus tard, Jupiter était derrière les arbres !” (The three planets aligned tonight. A few seconds later, Jupiter was behind the trees!)

upiter, Venus and Mercury are all visible in the western sky after sunset in the first few days of June. Jupiter is exceedingly low in the sky, nearly buried in bright twilight, and disappears within the first week of June, only to return before dawn in late July 2013 for a spectacular conjunction with Mars in the predawn sky. For the Northern Hemisphere, June will provide the best evening showing of Mercury for 2013. Better yet, you can use Venus, the sky’s most brilliant planet, to locate nearby Mercury. Meanwhile, Saturn – shines noticeably brightly and highest up for the night around nightfall.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM, SUBSIDING: Earth's magnetic field is calming down on June 1st following nearly 15 hours of non-stop geomagnetic storming. The storminess was caused by the arrival of an interplanetary shock wave on May 31st (1618 UT). The source of the shock is unknown. Current speculation focuses on a corotating interaction region (CIR)--that is, a shock-like transition zone between high- and low-speed solar wind streams. Whatever it was, the impact ignited some beautiful auroras. More storms could be in the offing tonight as the solar wind continues to blow faster than 600 km/s. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

AURORAS IN THE USA: Last night, Northern Lights spilled across the Canadian border into more than a dozen US states, turning the sky purple and green as far south as Colorado and Nebraska. On May 31, 2013, storm chasers Dave Demko and Heidi Farrar documented a large multi-vortex tornado southwest of El Reno, Oklahoma. The tornado eventually morphed into a violent wedge as it made a hard turn toward the northeast, where it impacted areas along Interstate 40 between El Reno and Yukon, and later continued causing damage as it moved into the southern Oklahoma City metro area.
