Last Weekend’s Blizzard now Impacting the U.K.

A satellite image shows what was last weekend's winter storm reforming and passing south of Iceland on Tuesday with its impressive structure. The storm weakened considerably on Wednesday prior to reaching the British Isles. MODIS image.

 

The winter storm that paralyzed the Northeast last weekend has brought snow and heavy rains to the U.K. this week. Parts of Scotland have received their greatest snow accumulations so far this winter although they are not nearly as impressive as what occurred in the U.S. and Canada February 8-9.

The ferocious winter storm (dubbed ‘Nemo’ by The Weather Channel’) has traversed the Atlantic although in a reformed state, and is bringing the heaviest snowfall of the season to Scotland and Northumberland in northeastern England.

Happy LOVE day to all. I think we can forget the cards and candy and flowers and just concentrate on sharing our love with all those we encounter on today’s journey. Actually this should be our mission each and every day. We feel better when we share our love, when we make others feel better, when we reach out to strangers and share a smile or a few kind words. It takes so little effort but reaps such huge rewards for all involved. It should be easier to accomplish this as we go deeper and deeper into the new world, for love is what it is all about. It is time to break away from the bad habits we have had ingrained in us regarding having to buy gifts to show that we care. Nonsense! Giving our time to another is very powerful and is remembered long after the candy box is empty and the rose petals have fallen off. We were well trained to become materialistic to lavish the corporations with our hard earned money. We gave but how much did it really mean to us. Be honest.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 was discovered by the La Sagra Sky Survey, Spain on February 23, 2012 and it was about 2.7 million miles (4.3 million kilometers) distant at the time of first observation. It’s flyby is the closest ever predicted Earth approach for an object this large (first estimates 45 m) which makes it such an interesting NEO. It is traveling at about 17,450 miles per hour (28,100 kilometers per hour), or 4.8 miles per second (7.82 kilometers per second) relative to Earth and by latest estimates it is about 65 meters in diameter. Heightened volcanic activity reported in the Solomon Islands region

February 13, 2013 – SOLOMON ISLANDS - The National Disaster Management Office in Solomon Islands says volcanic activity has increased on an island in Temotu province since the magnitude 8.0 earthquake several days ago. Sipuru Rove says the uninhabited island of Tinakula, which is about 50 kilometers north of Lata, has being making loud and strange sounds.

 

He says help and information is needed from technical experts to assess the risk posed to the local community by the volcano as they are worried an eruption could be near. “The volcanic activity on one of the islands that is off Lata is alarming at the moment. And this will really require scientific special people to assist us in assessing this volcanic activity which is beginning to be abnormal.” Sipuru Rove says there are also significant aftershocks which meant a plane with supplies and medical staff couldn’t land and was forced to return to Honiara. –Radio New Zealand
