Photographer and Lithuanian Chicago resident Ivette Ivens feels that public breastfeeding should be the norm as it has been since the dawn of human life, and shouldn’t be stigmatized the way it is. Through her highly stylized photography, she wants to remind everyone that breastfeeding is OK. And that it’s a “totally normal thing.” She is a mother of two and breastfed her son until he was 3.

She says: “I nursed them both anywhere I wanted. From church to parties, from farmers market to high-end designer stores. I believe that mothers should nurse their little ones whenever they want to,” states Ivens. She is also a proponent for extended breastfeeding. “Children know when it’s time to wean off. Mothers do too. Strangers don’t know, so they shouldn’t care.”

One of the reasons genetically engineered crops are held in such high regard by scientists and certain farmers around the world is their promoted ability to increase crop yields, and in effect, profit. But according to a recent study, this is not the case.

Not only are GMO crops horrible for the environment and likely to contribute to a list of degenerative health concerns, they’re also falsely promoted as an ideal way to nourish future generations of the Earth.

According to the Environmental Working Group in 2007: “Agricultural biotechnology continues to increase crop yield and farmer income worldwide while supporting the environment.”

Since this claim, there have been numerous other studies claiming that Biotech has a genetically modified “mission” to feed the world with DNA splicing and dicing. But such does not seem the case when findings are matched with profound hyperboles.

New rules implemented by the European Union now allow individual member states to block farmers from using GM organisms, even if the variety has been approved on an EU-wide basis. As TrueActivist shared before, Scotland was quick to take up that opportunity.

To “preserve the country’s clean and green brand,” Scotland chose to ‘opt out’ of growing GMO crops. And now, Germany is following suit.

As Independent.UK reports, Germany has begun taking the steps necessary to ban the use of all genetically modified (GM) crops.

As the public becomes increasingly more educated on topics concerning health and sustainability, more and more people are beginning to take action by choosing to consume more natural, wholesomely produced food.

But as the US government has operated largely by giving farmers subsidies to grow genetically engineered crops – most of which is used to support animal agriculture – it is now in a tough spot of striving to meet consumer demand for organic produce and keep the old system afloat.

As evident in Bloomberg’s recent report, big shifts are underway:

“Most of the corn and soybean shipments become feed for chickens and cows so they can be certified organic under U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines. Organic poultry and dairy operators shun feed made from Monsanto Co. and other domestic suppliers in favor of foreign products even as the U.S. remains the world’s top grower of corn and soybeans. As a result, importance to the United States of Romanian corn rose to $11.6 million in 2014 from $545,000 the year before. Soybean imports from India more than doubled to $73.8 million.”
